On Monday, Salesforce announced that it was acquiring leading analytics platform Tableau Software in an all-stock deal for $15.7 billion, to help enterprise customers accelerate digital transformation efforts with the ability to examine data across their entire business.

Salesforce is buying Tableau for $15.7 billion in an all-stock deal, which has been approved by the boards of both companies.

Salesforce CEO Mark Benioff said the deal will bring together the world's #1 CRM with the #1 analytics platform.

"Tableau can hook up to all the above sources and deliver BI analytics to end users directly, which reduces the data delivery time and democratizes analytics to be created and consumed at all skill levels, without developers", Harrison said. Customers include Charles Schwab, Verizon Communications and Southwest Airlines.

The acquisition of Tableau is expected to be completed during Salesforce's fiscal third quarter ending October 31, 2019, subject to customary closing conditions. In its last fiscal year ending January 31, Salesforce earned $1.43 per share on $13.28 billion in revenue.

In the statement, both vendors also noted their community of users - 1.4 million Trailblazers on the Salesforce side, and 1 million data enthusiasts on Tableau's. The decision to acquire Tableau, an analytics platform and data visualization specialist with over 86,000 clients worldwide, highlights the firm's shift into the analytics field and diversification beyond its main CRM product line.
