"No disrespect to [Massimiliano] Allegri and what he's done at Juventus but they have had Carlo Ancelotti, they have had Antonio Conte, Sarri, Jose Mourinho, all managers who have done great things and never stuck with them".

There is no doubt he would be afforded more time and freedom than any Chelsea manager under Abramovich as he is an extraordinarily popular man at Stamford Bridge. Rio Ferdinand, who played with Lampard for England, believes that the former Blues" great is indeed the "perfect choice' for the job.

Maurizio Sarri and his staff remain in limbo while they wait for his Chelsea exit to be rubber-stamped. He is the flawless choice.

"Would Lampard wilt under the pressure when big players throw a wobbly in training?"

Ferdinand told The Telegraph: "If Chelsea are going to get a transfer ban I don't think they can look anywhere but Frank".

It has been a turbulent season for Sarri as he has fallen foul of the Chelsea crowd, had on-pitch arguments with his players and been accused of being tactically incapable due to his refusal to deviate from his "Sarri-ball" approach.

And, while club legend and Derby County manager Frank Lampard remains the hot favourite, there is concern within the boardroom that the Englishman is not yet ready for such a high profile job. Meanwhile, further developments are expected in this particular case once Maurizio Sarri officially leaves for Juventus.
