Parasite, a black comedy about a family of clever scammers from South Korea's underclass, won the Palme d'Or top prize at Cannes on Saturday, the first time a Korean director has scooped the coveted award in the film festival's 72-year history.

And as well as Almodovar's "Pain And Glory", the festival was not short of other strong entries from Cannes darlings, including two-time Palme d'Or victor Ken Loach with a searing swipe at Britain's gig economy in "I'm Sorry We Missed You". Their deliberations are done in secret, so what will win is always a guessing game.

As of now, Korean directors have grabbed the highest honors at two of what are considered three world's most acclaimed film competitions: Cannes, Venice Film Festival and the Berlinale.

Best screenplay went to Céline Sciamma for Portrait of a Lady on Fire, a period romance about a relationship between a young painter and her subject.

Pedro Almodovar could win his first Palme for his self-reflective "Pain and Glory".
