While in most parts of the United States transportation is the source of most greenhouse gases, in New York City buildings are our main source of emissions. The Climate Mobilization Act mandates buildings larger than 25,000 square feet reduce emissions by 40 percent by 2040 and 80 percent by 2050.

"Our message is loud and clear", de Blasio said in the statement. Mayor de Blasio recently unveiled his Green New Deal to reduce carbon emissions in New York City.

The Trump International Hotel and Tower faces the most fines and will receive an annual penalty of nearly $851,000 in 2030 if renovations are not made, the statement said.

Buildings that fail to meet the marks will be punished by major fines.

"We will not let you mortgage our future for your real estate", de Blasio continued.

Speaking at a podium steps from the spot where Trump announced his own run in 2015, the Democrat said he had come to warn the president that Trump Organization buildings could face a combined $2.1 million in annual fines by 2030 if they don't comply with a new law requiring skyscraper owners to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

Some Trump supporters joined the protesters who booed and yelled, "You suck!" as the mayor tried to talk over the noise.

De Blasio had to shout to be heard over songs including a Frank Sinatra rendition of 'I've Got You Under My Skin'.

"We will do what's necessary to combat the climate crisis".

NY has positioned itself as a bulwark against Trump administration attempts to dismantle action to address climate change.

De Blasio told his supporters he plans to hold the Trump Organization accountable for what he claims it is doing to harm the environment. The aim is to make the city carbon neutral by 2050 with an emphasis on forcing all private and public building owners to modernize their infrastructure.
