In the interim, Coach Gase will be the acting General Manager.

Now, stunningly, he's out as the team's general manager. I will start a search for our new General Manager immediately.

Both men denied that a rift had developed in their relationship, but sources said Johnson was so concerned that he began spending more time at the Jets' facility to monitor the Gase-Maccagnan relationship.

NY made the borderline shocking announcement Tuesday that it fired general manager Mike Maccagnan as well as VP of player personnel Brian Heimerdinger.

Yahoo Sports senior National Football League reporter Charles Robinson tweeted that "philosophical differences bubbled up" between Gase and Maccagnan "on how money would be spent to build".

The timing is odd considering Maccagnan oversaw the Jets' draft less than three weeks ago, although there were rumors that he and Gase had some tension - which both denied.

News of Maccagnan's firing comes amid rumors that he and Gase got into an argument centered around the draft, and how much they should have offered running back Le'Veon Bell. "We have discussions on everything".

The Jets went 10-6 in their first season under Maccagnan and former coach Todd Bowles in 2015, but the team has struggled through three consecutive losing seasons since. Safety Jamal Adams and defensive lineman Leonard Williams are also recent draft picks by Maccagnan who have become building blocks for the defense. Philadelphia Eagles vice president of player personnel Joe Douglas could emerge as a candidate, Schefter suggested.
