Manchester United turned down chance to sign Matthijas de Ligt

Manchester United, for whom a new central defender is a priority this summer, are said to be in the running to sign De Ligt but, apparently, they could have added the young Dutchman to their squad last season for significantly cheaper.

The 36-year-old pundit was speaking on BBC and he said that the 26-year-old England global was much better than the 19-year-old Ajax captain.

Some of the top executives at Camp Nou flew to Amsterdam to meet with representatives of both Ajax and De Ligt to discover how much the deal would cost, and they are thought to have been quoted a fee of around €75m, similar to that paid for teammate Frenkie de Jong in January.

He has led Ajax to the brink of the Eredivisie title just days after their Champions League run came to an agonising end at the hands of Tottenham.

The former Southampton player has proved to a be a rock and a leader at the heart of Jurgen Klopp's defence and it's partly thanks to him that the club are in the Champions League final and go into the final day of the domestic season still with a Premier League chance. He plays for Liverpool.
