Measles case reported to DOH, visitors and Floridians asked to get vaccinated

The measles virus is highly contagious and can stay airborne or live on surfaces for up to two hours.

During a meeting Wednesday, the city's health board said it would be seeking civil, not criminal, penalties against the parents. Israel's Ministry of Health says she may have contracted the disease in NY, in Israel, or on a flight between the two.

"She's been in a deep coma for 10 days, and we're now just hoping for the best", said Dr. Itamar Grotto, associate director general of Israel's Ministry of Health. The CDC recommends infants 6 to 11 months old should receive one dose of the vaccine; children 12 months and older should have received two.

Measles is making a resurgence in Israel due primarily to parents not inoculating their children.

The measles cases in Rockland and in Brooklyn have been traced to unvaccinated members of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community who traveled to Israel. The measure is the broadest vaccination order in the United States in almost three decades. Almost one in three measles patients will develop ear infections, diarrhea or pneumonia and the disease is fata in about 1 of every 1,000 cases.

In 2000 - nearly four decades after parents began vaccinating their children - measles was declared eliminated in the United States, according to CDC data. In comparison, the CDC reported 372 measles cases in the USA in 2018, 120 cases in 2017, and only 86 in 2016.
