Sony Details Next-Generation PlayStation Console

Simply put, it's a beast. The publication recently sat down with lead systems architect Mark Cerny, who served in the same role for the development of the PlayStation 4, to discuss plans for its unnamed successor, which some reports have pegged for a 2020 launch. In fact, most of the games that Sony showcased at its E3 presentation previous year all could be two-platform releases as well.

What's more likely, is that the PlayStation 5's 3D audio will work in a similar way to Creative's SXFI technology, which uses a holographic algorithm to replicate the immersive soundstage of a full surround sound system through a pair of stereo headphones. That graphics card will allow for ray tracing on consoles. (For reference, the PS4 uses a 28 nm Jaguar-based CPU.) Clock speeds for the CPU haven't yet been released. Naturally, it is estimated that the Zen 2 chips will be significantly faster than that - an exciting prospect.

Beating at the heart of Sony's next-gen console is an AMD Ryzen CPU. If the PS5 can replicate these clock speeds, it would be a major upgrade over the pro. Throughout the extensive interview are details regarding what will power the inevitable PlayStation 5 and what it might offer.

The GPU in the PS5 wasn't explicitly stated.

The GPU will be based on AMD's Navi architecture.

A quick Google search will show 8k TVs cost in excess of $5,000, so we're still some way from them becoming a household item. Currently, Google and Nvidia have their own streaming consoles.

Will also support 8KPlayStation 5 will also support 8K graphics but Cerny did not provide further details.

We don't know. It's backwards compatible with PS4, which had no real backwards compatibility itself, so the answer for now is probably not.

As a gamer, it's been a little bit of a frustration that audio did not change too much between PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.

What games will be on PS5?

It's weird to say in this era of Google Stadia and the like, but it will be a console with hardware inside and it will support physical media. This is in contrast to the road Microsoft may be heading down; the Xbox One S All Digital Edition is coming May 7th and may be a harbinger of the Xbox's future. Furthermore, the game world loaded faster, resulting in a more responsive camera as well.

The team have now implemented the new drives and in practice, this means that Spider-Man running on the new devkit slashed load times from 15 seconds on a PS4 Pro, to a mere 0.8 seconds on the new setup.

No games have been confirmed for PS5 at this time.
