The school said it was investigating how the students gained access to the tower.

Some students said seniors break into the tower as a kind of a rite of passage.

"It is with great sadness that I report that Sydney Monfries, a senior at Fordham, died today after sustaining a fall inside the Keating Clock Tower in the early hours of the morning", he said.

When the student's vitals flatlined medics quickly decided it would be safer to hoist her out of the tower in a rescue basket, one responder riding with her to perform chest compressions.

Sydney Paige Monfries, 22, from Portland, Oregon, fell from a bell tower as she attempted to take photos of the NY skyline.

"I heard they were just getting a better view of the city", a senior told the paper.

Monfries fell over 12m from the bell tower's staircase. Another student, Anne, told the New York Post: "I think they were posting on Instagram when it happened".

The university said authorized school officials "have sometimes given tours of the tower, in part to satisfy students' curiosity about it, and reduce the likelihood that they would attempt to enter the structure without authorization".

Fordham's president said in an email to the university community that Monfries would be awarded a posthumous bachelor's degree.

"She couldn't breathe. She hit her head".

United States media reported emergency services struggled to rescue gravely injured Ms Monfries from the building after they realised it wasn't possible to carry her via stretcher down the staircase. Her condition was listed as critical at a hospital in the Bronx not far from the Fordham campus. "Theirs is an unimaginable loss, and we share their grief".
