"Today I challenge our top retail competitors (you know who you are!) to match our employee benefits and our $15 minimum wage", he said.

Walmart, which has raised its minimum wage twice since 2015, pays an entry wage of $11 per hour. The Minneapolis retailer has said it plans to raise starting hourly wages to $15 by the end of 2020.

Target and Walmart have increased starting wages for workers over the past few years as the job market grew hotter and people could find better pay and benefits elsewhere.

Shares of eBay fell almost 5% on Thursday, after Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos snubbed the rival e-commerce giant in his annual letter to shareholders.

In a quiet, yet firm reply, Dan Bartlett, Walmart's executive vice president of corporate affairs took to Twitter and shared an article that said Amazon paid no federal taxes a year ago despite making a humungous $11 billion plus in profits.

Bezos said in his letter that the wage hike has benefited more than 250,000 Amazon employees and over 100,000 seasonal employees who worked during the last holiday season at Amazon sites in the United States. Walmart's Dan Bartlett tweeted.

In an annual letter to shareholders, Bezos said Amazon wants to hire hire employees "who can think like owners".

Amazon's largesse is not unwarranted and perhaps Bezos can be forgiven for gloating, given that the USA minimum wage is still just $7.25 an hour. The pilots staging protests are from Atlas Air, Southern Air and ABX Air.

"As a company grows, everything needs to scale, including the size of your failed experiments", Bezos wrote. "Developers doubled the number of Alexa skills to over 80,000, and customers spoke to Alexa tens of billions more times in 2018 compared to 2017".

One caveat is that Amazon's workforce primarily works in distribution centres, which typically pay more than stores do because of the more demanding, physical nature of those roles, according to Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Charles Allen.
