Powerful storm hits Franklin, Texas, causing widespread damage today

Two children were killed and about a dozen people were injured in Texas Saturday after powerful storms spawned at least one suspected tornado and damaged several homes, authorities said.

National Weather Service meteorologist John Moore said a possible twister touched down Saturday in the Vicksburg, Mississippi, area.

Authorities say a possible tornado has touched down in western MS, causing damage to several businesses and vehicles. Trees were down throughout the hilly city on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi.

Texas is seeing the beginning of the unsafe and severe storms forecast to slam parts of the Southeast and Ohio River Valley this weekend.

More than 140,000 people remained without power in Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas late Saturday. A tornado was reported in the area 140 miles (225 kilometres) southwest of Memphis, Tennessee, at the time. No fatalities were reported. Students at Mississippi State University sheltered in basements and hallways as a tornado made its way near the Starkville campus. Multiple injuries have been reported, including two to children.

The Angelina County Sheriff's Office says the children, ages 8 and 3, were riding in the auto with their parents when the incident happened. The parents were in the fronts seats and were not injured.

In addition to the potential for tornado development, the strong line of storms will also produce damaging winds and heavy rain, capable of producing flash floods, particularly in Arkansas and parts of MS and Alabama.

A curfew was in effect from 8 p.m.to 7 a.m. Sunday in Franklin, Texas, about 125 miles south of Dallas, following a direct hit from a tornado that overturned mobile homes and damaged other residences.

A preliminary damage survey found that a tornado with peak intensity of EF-3 and winds up to 140 miles per hour touched down in Robertson County, according to a tweet from the National Weather Service in Forth Worth.

Emergency radio traffic indicated that search crews were having difficulty reaching damaged structures due to downed trees and power lines in the roadway.

Two people were taken to a hospital with injuries that aren't thought to be life-threatening, Yezak said.
