Earlier in the season, Atlanta signed star outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr.to what will be a bargain contract years down the road. Albies is making $575,000 this season as part of his rookie contract, and wouldn't have been eligible for arbitration for another two seasons.

Entering Thursday, he was hitting.364 with one homer and two RBIs in 11 games this season after batting.261 with 40 doubles, 24 homers, 72 RBIs, 14 steals and 105 runs past year.

According MLB Network, the two-year options are for $7 million and $4 million.

Compared to 2018, Albies should have many more RBI chances in 2019 as he is hitting behind Josh Donaldson, Freddie Freeman, Ronald Acuna, and Nick Markakis when facing a righty, instead of his 2018 batting spot where he mostly hit second. The new deal guarantees he will under Braves team control through the 2025 season.

Claiming the request was purely political, Mulvaney added: "That is not going to happen and they know it". Mnuchin used similar language in a letter to Neal this week.

After having initial success in limited duty late in the 2017 season, Ozzie took a huge step forward in 2018 and made his first All-Star team.

But what may be lost by many fans is why people inside the game reacted so strongly to Albies' contract. He is hitting.364 with a home run, two RBIs and two stolen bases through 11 games this season for Atlanta. In comments given following the Braves' contract extension press conference, Albies stated, "I'm excited to be here for another seven years". If the extensions are picked up, the deal could last through the 2027 season.

I don't think anyone can argue that Ozzie Albies is Jose Altuve, yet he is guaranteed more money than Altuve was at the same stage of their respective careers while allowing him to play with a close friend in a city that he now calls home.
