Officials provide update on tornado that hit small Texas town

Heavy rains and storms continued to rake the Magnolia State into the night, moving into Alabama. A tornado was reported in the area 140 miles (225 kilometers) southwest of Memphis, Tennessee, at the time.

The storms most capable of producing tornadoes and large hail will be the individual, rotating cells that form ahead of a larger complex of thunderstorms.

Starting out with hit and miss storms this morning, storms should remain below severe limits early but that all changes later today.

But tornadoes aren't the only possible cause of destruction Sunday.

Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley said 95-year-old Roy Ratliff died late Saturday when a tornado toppled a tree onto Ratliff's home in the town of Hamilton.

Police in Monroe County earlier described the destruction from the storm Saturday evening.

One thunderstorm cell near Columbus Air Force Base in MS has a potential "debris ball" signature on radar, which indicates the potential for significant tornado damage that can be detected by radar, he said. The weather service said the system is expected to shift to the Ohio Valley and the Southeast on Sunday.

National Weather Service meteorologist John Moore said a possible twister touched down Saturday in the Vicksburg, Mississippi, area. The children, ages 3 and 8, were killed when a tree fell on a auto Saturday.

The children, ages 3 and 8, were in the back seat with their parents in the front when the tree fell on their vehicle around 3 p.m., said Angelina County Sheriff's Department Captain Alton Lenderman.

"It looks like a storm came up through Louisiana and into MS and exploded in Monroe County", Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell told CNN.

The National Weather Service said preliminary information showed an EF-3 tornado touched down with winds of 140 miles per hour (225.3 kph).
