Employment in the United States mining industry, excluding oil and gas extraction, increased in March for a fourth-straight month, the Labor Department reported Friday.

Healthcare, which grew by 398,000 jobs over the past 12 months, added more jobs in March than professional and technical services, which added 34,000 jobs. The establishment survey measures nonfarm employment, hours, and earnings by industry.

The nation's unemployment rate held steady in March at 3.8 percent.

The March decline followed monthly increases of 66,800 net new jobs in January and 55,900 in February - the country's best two-month start to a year since 1981.

Notably, the USA labor force participation rate among people 25 to 54 years of age remained at 82.5%. Adding, "The labor market fell right back into step with where we were, not only with positive job numbers but with exceeded forecasts". March doesn't really change that materially. The remaining 944,000 persons marginally attached to the labor force in March had not searched for work for reasons such as school attendance or family responsibilities.
