Turn off your lights for "Earth Hour"

"We have appealed to our 27 lakh consumers in the suburbs to switch off lights and fans during Earth Hour and support the cause for environmental friendliness", said an Adani Electricity official.

The lights will go off at famous buildings and structures across the country between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on Saturday as part of the global event organised by conservation charity WWF to urge action to save the planet.

Joining in is easy: simply turn off your lights at 8:30 p.m. local time on 30 March. The Earth Hour has grown since its inception and over 180 countries and territories participated in last year's Earth Hour.

"We are the first generation to know we are destroying the world".

"Climate change is happening, we all need to switch on our efforts towards a sustainable future".

The world's biggest landmarks - such as the Sydney Opera House, Empire State Building, the Eiffel Tower, Carnaby Street, Buckingham Palace, and Edinburgh Castle - switch off lights as a visual display of their commitment.

WWF-Australia CEO Dermot O'Gorman told AFP that "Earth hour still is the world's largest grassroots movement for people to take action on climate change".
