Kids get measles vaccine after U.S. county declares emergency

Vaccines are required for school children, but nearly all U.S. states allow exemptions for families who say it's against their religious beliefs, and 17 states allow a parent to opt out for philosophical or personal reasons.

Almost half of the 314 measles cases now being reported in the U.S. are coming from Rockland County, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. He also said this is just to draw attention to make people understand the seriousness of the situation.

"We will not sit idly by while children in our community are at risk", County Executive Ed Day said in a press conference on Tuesday.

The order adds authorities will "not be patrolling or asking for vaccination records". "That is ridiculous. However, parents will be held accountable if they're found to be in violation of this emergency declaration". Health officials say the best way to stop the spread is a vaccination rate of 92 to 95 per cent. Day confirmed that at present at the Rockland County only 72.9 percent of individuals less than 18 years of age have been vaccinated.

The new law means that parents of those children who send their kids to schools while they are unvaccinated will get a fine of up to $564 or €500. 'It's irrational, ' he said.

"We're not punishing the people who are doing the right thing already and following the rules".

"The rate of immunisation in the religious communities, for young people, it's about 50 to 60, which is not almost enough". In a recent hearing a federal judge has denied the request of the parents that their unvaccinated children be allowed to return to the Waldorf School. Paediatric organisations have supported this legislation.

Under the emergency, Rockland County banned non-vaccinated minors from public places in a bid to prevent the once-eliminated disease from spreading.

The measles outbreak began this past October when unvaccinated travelers visited ultra-Orthodox and Hasidic communities in Rockland.

However, once a person is infected, there is no specific treatment for measles, meaning vaccination is literally a life-saving tool. She said she had chosen not to vaccinate him because she did "not want to injure" him, but she brought him to the pediatrician Wednesday for the injection.
