Fisker, the auto company founded by designer Henrik Fisker, has released a teaser image of an affordable all-electric crossover to be revealed later this year.

While history certainly didn't play out that way, it's an odd twist that Henrik Fisker's new venture, Fisker Inc., has dropped a teaser for its first product-a fully electric SUV-into the afterglow of last week's Tesla Model Y electric SUV introduction.

The sculpted SUV will be offered with all-wheel drive with two electric motors, one in the front and one at the rear. Early deposits won't be taken until closer to the start of production: Fisker says it's now "finalizing the selection of a facility" to actually manufacture the SUV, though it has said that location will be somewhere in the US. It will come standard with an extended range (target of approximately 300 miles / 480 kilometres), enabled by an enhanced +80 KWh lithium-ion battery pack. It features what the firm calls "captivating design touches that have been traditionally reserved for supercars in the past".

Set at a base price below US$40,000 (Rs 25.26 lakh), the final pricing and a drivable prototype are expected to be revealed by the end of 2019.

Up front the wide SUV sports a high-mounted radar system that is flanked by sleek LED headlights above curved fog lights below. It unveiled an unnamed electric SUV priced at $40,000. Without offering specifics, Fisker says the new model will have "an extended open-air atmosphere", hinting at some kind of convertible roof. The vastly spacious interior is complemented by a modern aesthetic and high-quality materials. The dashboard will get a sizable head-up display, along with "a unique, intuitive user interface that will control some of the latest emerging in-vehicle technologies". Reservations for the vehicle will be available closer to the production date. We've reached out to Fisker to see if all or any of this applies to the higher-volume SUV. As such, this SUV will be the first of what the automaker says should end up a range of three "mass market vehicles".

Fisker is among several startups in the United States and elsewhere moving into the electric vehicle market which is expected to see strong growth.

Also like Tesla, Fisker is figuring out manufacturing plans, but will select a facility within the U.S. The Model 3 is made at Tesla's Fremont factory, while the Model Y may be assembled in the Nevada Gigafactory.
