1.9 million persons live with HIV in Nigeria ― NAIIS

About 3.2 million persons are now living with the virus in the country.

The size estimate of the key population identified Kaduna state with the highest number of female sex workers and people who inject drugs active hotspots with Kano State identified as the state with the highest numbers of men who have sex with men active hotspots.

"The Nigeria HIV/AIDS Indicator and Impact Survey represents an extraordinary example of what can be achieved by working together", Young said adding that, "the United States government looks forward to increased government of Nigeria ownership and investment in the HIV response to ensure sustainability". The survey also showed that Northern Nigeria has a lower HIV/AIDS burden than south.

The report also adds that the North-West has the lowest AIDS prevalence rate at 0.6 per cent, while the South-South geopolitical zone has the highest at 3.1 per cent.

Dr. Sidibe referred to the results of a recently conducted survey on HIV launched by President Buhari which has indicated positive outcomes for HIV in Nigeria, especially with fewer infections and fewer people living with the disease.

Aliyu said Nigeria is behind South Africa, Mozambique and India.

"We will ensure that we focus our efforts on ensuring those infected with HIV achieve viral suppression, minimising the risk of HIV transmission and moving Nigeria closer to controlling the HIV epidemic".

"Today is a critical turning point in Nigeria for an HIV epidemic that has killed many of our countrymen and women".

The Country Director, Center for Disease Control Nigeria (CDC), Mahesh Swaminathan said the results will help the government improve its efforts in the fight against the virus. In recent years, there has been a significant expansion in the country's response to HIV.

The NAIIS was led by the Government of Nigeria through the Federal Ministry of Health and the National Agency for the Control of AIDS.

Mr Michel Sidibe, the Executive Director, Joint United Nations Programme on AIDS (UNAIDS), commended NAIIS for a job well done, noting that the result of the survey will be a game changer for Nigeria.

The survey, which is the largest in the world reached around 220,000 people in about 100,000 households and was conducted between July and December 2018.
