Why Ben Affleck Loves His Massive Phoenix Tattoo

It's one of my favorite pieces of celebrity trivia: Ben Affleck, a two-time Oscar victor, has a giant tattoo of a phoenix on his back.

The actor and director told Ellen the colorful phoenix "represents something really important" to him on Thursday's episode of her show.

Affleck's tattoo was fully revealed past year while he was shooting scenes for his new Netflix film, Triple Frontier, which also stars Charlie Hunnam, Oscar Isaac, Garrett Hedlund and Pedro Pascal.

DeGeneres played into that, joking that it was a phoenix "rising from your ass".

Huh. There must be a good metaphor for something that people try to kill but keeps rising from the ashes instead...

Affleck praised DeGeneres for her fast-paced quip before giving a little more detail on the body art. "It's meaningful to me", he said. I'm very happy with it. "I actually do have a number of tattoos but I try to have them in places where you don't have to do a lot of cover up they get sort of addictive, tattoos, after a while".

"@NewYorker I'm doing just fine", Affleck tweeted.

Affleck acknowledged public opinion but said he remains fond of his tattoo. "We were two hours north of the city in Hawaii and we didn't know the paparazzi was there".

Back in 2016, he told Mario Lopez the entire thing was a fake for an upcoming movie. "And yeah, the sentiment ran, you know, against, which I think- I love my tattoo. Luckily, I'm the one who has it". "So they got a picture of my tattoo". The kids are healthy.

Affleck also gave an update on his health following his stint in rehab in the fall for alcohol abuse. "Life is good so whatever it took to get to this place, I'm grateful for". And if he loves his giant tattoo, he should be proud.
