The deal was defeated in the Commons on Tuesday evening by 149 votes.

It will embolden Mrs May who will now seek to put her deal back before Parliament next week with the next "Meaningful Vote" penciled in for Tuesday as she can now hang the threat of a long delay to Brexit over the ERG and DUP.

"I would be delighted if a consensus emerges behind the Prime Minister's deal over the next day or two".

Although the PM managed to convince about 40 Tory MPs to change their mind, it was not almost enough to overturn the historic 230 vote defeat she suffered on the same deal in January. She replied: "I will be voting for the motion standing in my name".

May told Bone this was not realistic: "The EU have made it clear there will be no agreement without a withdrawal agreement, and that includes what we have already negotiated on citizens' rights, a financial settlement and a Northern Ireland protocol".

It said backing for the PM's deal has now more than doubled to 40% - though the responses had been given before the Commons voted to take a no-deal Brexit off the table on Wednesday night. "That's why Members of Parliament must reject this deal tomorrow".

'Labour has set out a credible alternative plan.

May responded: "The deal that he's proposing has been rejected several times by this house".

Wordsworth's dancing daffodils do look golden in Downing Street but inside Number 10, where Britain's embattled Prime Minister is holed up nursing a sore throat after non-stop negotiations with Brussels over her Brexit deal, the mood is anything but sunny.

"While an extension of Article 50 is now inevitable, responsibility for that extension lies exclusively and squarely at the Prime Minister's door", he said. "This is a rudderless government in the face of a huge national crisis".

"We are all affected by Brexit", he told The Telegraph.

In January, May's Brexit plan was rejected by the MPs with a 230-vote margin.

Ahead of the no-deal Commons vote, the government announced that most imports into the United Kingdom would not attract a tariff in the event of a no-deal Brexit. Tariffs would be maintained to protect some industries, including agriculture.

The government also announced it will not introduce any new checks or controls, or require customs declarations for any goods moving from across the border from Ireland to Northern Ireland if the United Kingdom leaves the European Union without a deal. To do this, ministers have promised indicative votes if the Government can't pass a deal - but, importantly, at a time of their choosing.

The decision to drop all checks to avoid friction at the UK's land border with the European Union will be temporary while longer term solutions are negotiated.
