‘The Sopranos’ prequel ‘Newark’ sets a 2020 release date

As previously reported, the film was originally had the working title of "The Many Saints of Newark" but that has now changed to just "Newark".

The release date for The Sopranos prequel has been revealed as well as a new name.

Here's a question for you folks: do y'all care about Newark?

More specifically, it follows the life of Dickie Moltisanti, a frequently mentioned character in "The Sopranos" but one who was never seen in the original series, including flashbacks.

The rest of the cast includes Vera Farmiga, Ray Liotta, Jon Bernthal, Corey Stoll, Billy Magnussen and John Magaro, although there's still no word on what parts any of those actors will play.

The upcoming film will be set in 1960s Newark, New Jersey, and will touch upon the Newark riots, which occurred during the "Long Hot Summer of 1967" when race riots spread across United States cities. The Sopranos series creator David Chase is co-producing and writing with Lawrence Konner. "Sopranos" (and "Game of Thrones") alum Alan Taylor is directing the movie for New Line. In addition to Nivola, Michael Gandolfini will play a younger version of Tony Soprano as he takes over the role made famous by his father James Gandolfini, who passed away in 2013.

With a late-September release date, "Newark" may be making an awards season run, capitalizing on the fan following and sustained critical acclaim for "The Sopranos".
