Tesla CEO Elon Musk will unveil the company's long-awaited Model Y "baby SUV" at a glitzy event scheduled for 11:00 p.m. ET Thursday at its Los Angeles Design Studio.

The new crossover model is expected to be slightly longer and taller than the Model 3.

Its launch will complete the company founder's joke of having a "sexy" range of cars. That means if the Model Y is offered in a Standard Range, rear-wheel drive configuration like the Model 3, we should expect a starting price of around $38,500.

"Detailed specs & pricing will be provided, as well as test rides in Y".

Speaking of costs, Tesla says that the Model Y will be roughly 10 percent more expensive than a comparable Model 3. Even with the reduced range, Tesla is predicting demand to be perhaps 50 percent higher for the Model Y than the Model 3 owing to the former's crossover body style. Compact SUVs are the largest vehicle segment and is 50 percent larger than the next-largest segment. The fifth Tesla EV-after the original Roadster, the Model S, the Model X, and the Model 3-will share its wheelbase, chassis, and powertrain options with the brand's current smallest model, the Model 3 sedan.

China's General Administration of Customs stopped clearing Tesla Model 3 imports last week, saying they did not have the required Chinese language warning signs and had missing or incorrect nameplate labels.

Model Y will share 75 per cent of its parts with the Model 3 and will likely be built at Gigafactory 1 in Nevada. This should make production more efficient for Tesla and help keep costs down.
