Police confirm ‘number of fatalities’ in New Zealand mosque shooting

Media in New Zealand said people have been evacuated from near a second mosque in Linwood, Christchurch, with police swarming on the site.

New Zealand Police have confirmed there is an "active shooter" and say the situation is "ongoing".

"Police urge anyone in central Christchurch to stay off the streets and report any suspicious behaviour immediately to 111".

TVNZ reported that New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern addressed the nation shortly after Friday's attack.

Three local schools are now on lockdown.

"To most of all show the invaders that our lands will never be their lands, our homelands are our own, and that, as long as a white man still lives, they will NEVER conquer our lands and they will never replace our people".

Earlier, an eyewitness told RNZ News that at least 15 police cars along with armed police were near the mosque. To any Muslims, both in New Zealand and around the world I am sorry.

"I can say it is clear that this is one of New Zealand's darkest days", Ardern said. I spoke to one of them shortly after (the incident), the team's strength and conditioning coach Mario Villavarayen said.

In a lengthy manifesto published online the supposed shooter outlined who he was and why he carried out the massacre at the Christchurch mosque, NZ Herald reported.

The livestream began as the gunman drove to Al Noor Mosque in Deans Avenue, parking his auto in a nearby driveway.

The Christchurch Mosque shooting has left estimates of upwards of 50 injured, according to oscillating reports in the wake of the tragic event.

"Police are now responding to reports of shots fired in central Christchurch at around 1.40pm", police said in a statement.

Apart from numerous witness reports of casualties, a reporter following the Bangladesh cricket team, who are now in New Zealand, tweeted that the team had "escaped from a mosque near Hagley Park where there were active shooters".

Stuff is reporting shots being fired at Christchurch hospital.

A neighbor described mass casualties inside the mosque and said he saw the gunman flee. The players just started running when they heard the shots. "This happened at about 1.45pm". People in the city are told to stay indoors.
