Netflix Canceled 'One Day at a Time' & the Internet Is in Mourning

Fans reacted angrily to Netflix's Twitter announcement, which read: 'We've made the very hard decision not to renew One Day At A Time for a fourth season.

On Twitter, executive producer Mike Royce spoke out about the news, expressing gratitude to One Day at a Time fans and revealing that Sony, which produced the show, had plans to shop it to another network.

"One Day at a Time" remained a critical darling throughout its entire 3-season run, but as is the case with all shows that air on Netflix, its viewership statistics were kept under wraps.

The modern-day remake of the beloved Norman Lear comedy followed a Cuban-American family led by a divorced, former military mom (Justina Machado), who was raising two teenagers - Elena (Isabella Gomez) and Alex (Marcel Ruiz) - with the help of her traditional Cuban mother Lydia (EGOT victor Rita Moreno).

Just last month, Gloria Calderón Kellett, one of the series' showrunners, took to Twitter pleading for fans to tweet their support, and save One Day at a Time from cancelation. The choice did not come easily - we spent several weeks trying to find a way to make another season work but in the end simply not enough people watched to justify another season.' the streaming platform wrote.

One Day's third season ended with Penelope's graduation from nursing school. Truly, I am so honored that we got to tell our stories.Yes it was a Latinx family but it was a universal story about family and love. "While it's disappointing that more viewers didn't discover 'One Day at a Time, ' I believe the series will stand the test of time".
