Last season's beaten finalists booked their spot in Friday's draw, while Premier League rivals Manchester City had put themselves in the hat by annihilating Germans Schalke on Tuesday, and last week Tottenham finished the job against Borussia Dortmund as Man United stunned PSG. "But it has been a top league and there haven't been that many teams [in the latter stages] of this one".

Liverpool have previously taken part in six quarter-finals in the Champions League era, all of which have been post-2000. "Man City kind of got through pretty comfortably in the end".

Back in 1999 Fergie's men beat Inter, then Juventus en route to the Final, where they completed the famous treble with a last-gasp comeback win against Bayern Munich.

The Premier League might be awakening again as a European force, but Ronaldo and Messi remain the kings of the competition and they should strike fear into the hearts of every English club still dreaming of winning this year's Champions League.
