At least nine people were killed on March 13, 2019 when two teenagers opened fire at a school in Suzano, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, at 9:30 a.m.; the boys then killed themselves.

Another shooting occurred shortly before the massacre in the vicinity of the school, when a person was injured during an apparent robbery attempt.

The attack comes after Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro announced that the country's gun ownership controls would be eased. Police say the students killed were all around the age of 15.

The school has about 1000 primary and secondary students aged between six and 18, and a language centre.

The attackers appeared to be in their early to mid-20s, and authorities don't believe they were former students, the governor said. The two also killed the owner of a nearby used-car lot and stole a vehicle before attacking the school.

Brazil is one of the most violent countries in the world with 64,000 murders in 2017, a rate of nearly 31 per 100,000 inhabitants - that is three times higher than the level the United Nations classifies as endemic violence.

Ten people, including the gunmen, were killed in total, Sao Paulo police said.
