Greta Thunberg nominated for Nobel Peace Prize for climate activism

"We have nominated Greta because the climate threat may be one of the most important causes of war and conflict", parliamentary representative Freddy Andre Oevstegaard said.

Friday's strike is expected to be the biggest yet as evidence mounts of the climate emergency facing the planet.

The movement started last August, when a 15-year-old girl in Sweden named Greta Thunberg began refusing to go to school and instead demonstrated in front of Sweden's parliament to call attention to climate change after Sweden experienced its hottest summer on record, according to The Guardian.

A demand that our U.S. legislators implement the Green New Deal and other legislative actions to decrease the climate crisis.

After her speeches at the United Nations climate change conference in Poland and at the Davos forum, she became an example for many young people all over the world, who since have promoted similar initiatives.

Asked whether she feels optimistic about the potential of Friday's protest, Gillibrand replied: "I wouldn't say optimistic is quite the right word".

In a historical speech she delivered at COP24 climate talks in Poland previous year, she had reprimanded global leaders for their inaction on climate change. It's estimated that hundreds of thousands of students will take part.

It's not the first time schoolkids have ditched class for protests in the streets - in November, students filled arcades and city squares, defying calls by the Prime Minister to stay in school, to call for an end to political inertia on climate policy.

Her successful campaigning has resulted in her giving lectures at the UN Climate Talks and World Economic Forum.

"Tomorrow we schoolstrike for our future", she added in another post.

"For way too long, the politicians and the people in power have gotten away with not doing anything to fight the climate crisis, but we will make sure that they will not get away with it any longer", Thunberg told the crowd at a school strike in Antwerp, Belgium this month.
