Google may be working on foldable Pixel phones of its own

Whether this foldable Pixel phone from Google ever sees the light of day is of course unknown and to be honest, not expected but it is good to see Google at least doing the basic groundwork should they ever want to release a foldable Pixel. Aside from that, the phone seems quite familiar to the Galaxy Fold from Samsung.

Neither of the designs in the patent shows any revolutionary new form of flexible screen that other companies haven't considered, but it's interesting that there's no sign of a "notebook"-type foldable like the Galaxy Fold or Huawei Mate X". Samsung and Huawei have already launched their first foldable smartphone while others like Xiaomi and Oppo have already teased their versions of a foldable phone. The tech giant is rumoured to be working on a foldable smartphone.

We don't expect to hear anything official about Google's devices for some time - the company doesn't launch phones in the numbers many other other brands do, and it usually announces them at the end of the year, so we've a while to wait before we get any official word on the handsets.

We'll keep you updated with all the leaks, rumors and news about Google's foldable, and all the other folding devices headed to the market.

The device is likely to have an inwardly foldable display

Titled Foldable display neutral axis management with thin, high modulus layers, the application was submitted with WIPO last June and published in mid-December. However, Google is also looking at the possibility of folding a display around two hinges, that would give the device a "Z-fold" aspect.

It can be hard to create foldable top-emitting plastic OLED displays that have a small folding radius in both directions (i.e., having two surfaces of the display fold both towards each other and away from each other) and that can survive many fold-unfold cycles.

Foldable phones are certainly the talk of the town this year. According to the patent application the foldable Pixel will fold inwards from top to bottom, just like those flip phones we all used to know and love. A report said not too long ago that Samsung sent both Apple and Google foldable display samples.
