James Gunn has been re-instated as director of Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, according to Deadline.

"What nearly no one knew was that Marvel and Disney had never undertaken a search and had gone back to Gunn and made a deal.in secret, according to insiders". The agreement that was reached was that Gunn will complete production on that film before he begins anything on the third Guardians film. Deadline reports that, less than a year after he was sacked from the company following the resurfacing of offensive tweets from years prior, Gunn has been rehired as the writer and director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the franchise he launched back in 2014.

The 51-year-old film-maker, who had been behind both previous instalments of the Marvel franchise, came under fire when old tweets resurfaced that made light of 9/11, rape and paedophilia.

When Gunn was sacked, he issued a statement apologizing for his controversial tweets. "As I've developed as a person, so has my work and my humor", he said in a statement at the time. Early on after Gunn's dismissal, it was confirmed the studio planned to utilize Gunn's script - which had been turned in prior to his firing. "Although I don't support James Gunn's inappropriate jokes from years ago, he is a good man", Pratt said.
