Deadly Cyclone Idai To Hit Zimbabwe Over The Weekend

Earlier on Thursday, News24 reported that a major cyclone was expected to make landfall in Mozambique in the evening, bringing with it high wind speeds and rain.

She spoke to reporters late Tuesday after a meeting of the Council of Ministers held in Maputo to discuss the deadly flooding.

"This storm has already triggered torrential rainfall that's led to over 100 fatalities in southern Malawi and Mozambique", according to Derek van Dam, reporting for CNN.

In neighbouring Malawi, floods have already claimed 45 lives and left over 230,000 people without shelter.

However, in a statement issued today, the agency said SA will have its own, unrelated weather challenges such as possible heavy rains and localised flash flooding in some parts of the country.

A tropical cyclone is a low-pressure weather phenomenon that forms over oceans when the water temperature is at least 26 degrees Celsius. The cyclone was located over the Mozambique Channel on 12 March and is expected to strengthen into intense tropical cyclone status (Category 4 equivalent) again prior to making landfall.
