Windsor employers expect "cautiously optimistic" hiring climate

Nationwide, employers in all 13 industry sectors expect to add staff in Q2 2019. Net employment outlooks are also strong for wholesale and retail trade, at 24%, as consumers dine out and demand immediate delivery from groceries to fast fashion.

The survey looked from the ManpowerGroup looked at more than 1,900 Canadian employers and found 84 per cent of Calgary businesses are expected to hold employment at current levels. Between those jobs and the latest Manpower survey, Borhot calls it a good scenario and says people are coming back into the workforce.

"Ultimately the biggest piece of insight I can give is for job seekers to understand the skills gap, understand that there is work out there, but understanding what you're skill set versus what's skill set that's needed and bridging that gap", Borhot said. With an average outlook of just +2% over the past year, the sector has recorded its least optimistic year since the depths of the financial crisis in 2009. A five percentage-point improvement was seen in this sector.

According to the survey, hiring activity in Singapore is expected to remain modest for Q2 2019, with employers in Singapore reporting a seasonally adjusted Net Employment Outlook of +11%.

Meanwhile, Outlooks weaken in four sectors, including the Restaurants & Hotels sector with a decrease of 8 percentage points. The weakest hiring prospects were seen in agriculture, by 16 percent, the survey showed.

As for the mining & construction sector, a moderate rise in headcount is anticipated, with a net employment outlook of +11%, while it stands at +10% for the manufacturing sector.

Employers in Indiana, Maine, Alaska, Colorado, Kansas, North Carolina and OR reported the strongest employment outlooks. Meanwhile, Micro- and Medium-size employers report cautious hiring plans with Outlooks of +1%. However, the Medium employer Outlook declines by 6 percentage points. "It is also a five percentage point decrease from the Outlook reported during the same time previous year, indicating a flat hiring pace for the upcoming months".

Globally, research for the second quarter of 2019 reveals employers expect to add to payrolls in 40 of 44 countries and territories in the period up to the end of June. Croatian, Japanese and Greek employers report the strongest hiring prospects for the coming quarter, while the weakest labour markets are forecast for Hungary, Spain, Argentina, Panama and Turkey.
