But a burgeoning sex scandal in the industry shows how pervasive discrimination and abuse are in South Korean society, activists said.

The videos, which were filmed without the women's consent, were allegedly shared by singer Jung Joon Young, AllKPop reported.

He said he will pull himself out from all TV shows where he has appeared, halt all activities in the entertainment scene and "put everything down" as a public figure. Jung was one of three male artists in a group chat room where some members shared secretly filmed footage of a sexual nature of at least 10 women, according to local broadcaster SBS.

Meanwhile, star agencies whose artists' names have been mentioned in online rumors about Jung Joon-young's videos warned of legal measures against those who spread "false rumors".

Jung later said in a statement that he was admitting to "all my crimes", and announced he was also leaving the entertainment business as a result.

The case against Jung was discovered during a separate police investigation into K-pop superstar Seungri - who was reportedly a member of Jung's group chat. K-pop stars generally cultivate clean-cut images - and are actively promoted by the South Korean government as a key cultural export - making the scandal even more shocking. He has been charged with illegal filming and leaking visual material.
