The Environmental Protection Agency has announced Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will voluntarily recall 862,520 vehicles in the United States.

Multinational auto manufacturer Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV (FCA) will recall hundreds of thousands of vehicles after they failed to meet USA emissions standards, according to U.S. regulators.

The EPA said the discovery was made through routine testing carried out by the agency and the automaker.

The EPA told Reuters that it will continue its investigation into other Fiat Chrysler models, which it says could also be non-compliant and may be subject to future recalls.

"Today's EPA announcement reflects a new policy for announcing routine emissions recalls", said FCA spokesman Eric Mayne.

Vehicles covered by the recall include Dodge Journey SUVs from the 2011-2016 model years, the Dodge Avenger and Chrysler 200 mid-size sedans (2011-2014 mode years), 2011-2012 Dodge Calibers and Jeep Compass and Patriot models from 2011-2016. "Nor are there any associated fines". Owners of vehicles involved in the recall must wait until they receive notification from Fiat Chrysler before scheduling a dealership appointment.

FCA will replace the catalytic converters on the affected vehicles.

"We began contacting affected customers last month to advise them of the needed repairs, which will be provided at no charge", the company added.

"We will provide assistance to consumers navigating the recall and continue to ensure that auto manufacturers abide by our nation's laws created to protect human health and the environment", EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler said.

In January, Fiat Chrysler agreed to pay $800 million to settle claims from the U.S. Department of Justice and California alleging that it used illegal software to subvert diesel emissions tests, but a criminal probe is ongoing.

Fiat Chrysler owners can continue to drive their vehicles, the government said.

However, given the large number of vehicles included in the recall, the campaign will span the entirety of the 2019 calendar year.
