Facebook recovering from global outage

The company blamed the outage on a server configuration change.

Some of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp's more than 2 billion users were unable to access the online services from Wednesday until Thursday afternoon as the social network and its sister apps suffered a prolonged outage. Their outage map for Facebook showed a surge in reports in the Northeast from Washington, D.C. through NY, though a cursory search of the Twitter free-for-all on the topic indicates the reach is well beyond the greater metropolitan areas.

"Yesterday, a server configuration issue made it hard for people to access our apps and services. We've now resolved the issues and our systems are recovering", the company said in a tweet.

Thousands of users took to Twitter over the past day to complain about the outage, causing the hashtag #facebookdown to trend.

Facebook's shares fell almost two per cent in morning trading on Thursday.

A Facebook spokesperson told CNN Business that despite some online rumors, the issue was not caused by a hack or an attack, adding that the company was focused on resolving the issue and hoped to eventually share details about what caused the problem.

Facebook is facing a slew of lawsuits and regulatory inquiries over its privacy practices, including ongoing investigations by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, the Securities and Exchange Commission and two state agencies in NY. The company said it has fixed the glitch.
