Large study finds no connection between MMR vaccine and autism

An outbreak in an Orthodox Jewish community in NY began when an unvaccinated child returned home after acquiring the disease in Israel, where a major flare-up is occurring.

But, the damage has been done.

In late February, YouTube said it was taking steps to prevent anti-vaccine channels from making money off their videos.

Many criticized the results of studies debunking Wakefield. Specifically, they note that in large cohort studies, it is possible that certain high-risk groups, such as the siblings of children with autism, may be overlooked.

"MMR not only protects them, but also limits the chances of the virus spreading more widely, for example to children who are too young to have the vaccine and to adults who may be more vulnerable to the disease".

Researchers published their report on Monday in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine. That study followed a similar model using a cohort of 537,303 Danish children born between 1991 and 1998.

No increased risk of autism was observed when comparing children who had received the MMR vaccine and those that did not.

The MMR vaccine is readily available throughout the state.

"Although many other well-designed studies have likewise shown that the measles vaccine does not increase a child's risk for measles, this new study provides even stronger evidence about its safety and should be reassuring to even the most skeptical parents", Dr. Andrew Adesman, chief, Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics, Cohen Children's Medical Center, New Hyde Park, NY, told Healthline.

Study Shows Once and For All That Vaccines Don't Cause Autism

The authors, from Copenhagen's Statens Serum Institut, concluded: "The study strongly supports that MMR vaccination does not increase the risk for autism, does not trigger autism in susceptible children, and is not associated with clustering of autism cases after vaccination".

Further analyses of the data revealed that there is also no links between autism and vaccination even those that are not MMR.

The study is not a controlled one and so there are a variety of variables unaccounted for.

With 66 confirmed cases in Washington and four in OR, health officials there have dubbed the ongoing incident a public health emergency.

With an air of frustration, the authors write, "Even in the face of substantial and increasing evidence against an MMR-autism association, the discussion around the potential link has contributed to vaccine hesitancy".

However, despite the risks, there is a growing anti-vaccine sentiment in the United States and around the world.

Typically, MMR vaccines that give protection against measles, mumps, and rubella, is given to children in two doses, the first when the kids are around one year old, and the second is anytime between 18 months and when they start school. "My parents thought they were doing the right thing".

The call comes as 32 cases of measles have now been confirmed across Greater Manchester.
