Canterbury measles outbreak: 22 people infected

New Zealand's Ministry of Health said in a statement in late February that since 2012, all cases of measles in New Zealand came from travellers bringing the disease from overseas.

After the detailed survey regarding the timely vaccination of children, the Health department found that nearly one-fifth of the Canterbury did not get regular vaccinations.

Anyone exposed who might be at risk may notice their first symptoms about 10 to 12 days following exposure. Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, sleepiness and irritability, followed by a red rash.

According to AZDHS, Measles spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes, and symptoms typically appear seven 12 days after exposure, but can take up to 21 days to appear in some cases. This will allow the office or hospital to make a plan to prevent other people from potential exposure.

Vaccines are free at community health centres. For adults and kids over five a pharmacist may also have the vaccine available.

Australian health authorities issued a measles alert last week after an Australian traveler contracted the highly contagious disease while holidaying in Vietnam and brought it back to Darwin in the Northern Territory.

Measles can cause serious complications such as deafness from ear infections, or deadly pneumonia and swelling of the brain.
