Mauro Icardi has been stripped of the Inter Milan captaincy amid protracted talks over a new contract.

In a move that has surprised many, Inter announced on their Twitter account that Mauro ICARDI is no longer the club captain.

"The decision to take the captain's armband off Icardi was hard and painful because we know all about his value", Spalletti said at a news conference.

Icardi's future with the club has been in doubt in recent weeks given uncertainty over whether he'll sign an extension to his current contract, which expires in 2021.

The Argentina global trained with the squad on Wednesday but was a notable absentee when Inter named the 19-man party who would travel to Austria for the first leg of their last-32 tie.

"The things going on around Icardi have disturbed us, both him and the team which he used to captain".

The Argentine striker who is on a seven-game goal-dought has reportedly been at loggerheads with the club's hierarchy over a new contract, amidst interest from Europe's elite.

It is understood that the decision was a mutual one between the Serie A club and manager Luciano Spalletti.

It comes amid hard contract renewal talks with the Argentine.

Icardi has scored 122 goals and registered 26 assists in 210 games since joining the club from Sampdoria in April 2013 for a reported €6.5 million. He is quoted by Football Italia as saying: "I have not created any problems for Icardi".

The situation became more unclear when Nara, speaking on the Tiki Taka show, said: "I would like Mauro to be more protected by the club because sometimes some bad things come from inside". He needs to free himself from the talk that is around him.
