Winter Snow Storm Wallops Pacific Northwest; Washington Declares State of Emergency

The counties covered by the Winter Weather Advisory could receive 5 to 7 inches of snow. They took cover behind picnic tables and used sleds as shields.

Nuisance snow will precede this storm from the northern Plains through the Great Lakes and to the interior Northeast into Sunday night.

"This is a flawless morning to bundle up and play in the snow, but stay off the roads if possible", Gov. Jay Inslee wrote on Twitter. And wouldn't you know it, the city's canine residents can't get enough. In the central part of the state, snow drifts blocked roads and forced the closure of US 2 and Interstate 90, in addition to causing multiple vehicle crashes.

The storm will arrive overnight Monday into Tuesday with flurries before snow becomes steadier sometime around 8 a.m. Snow will change to freezing rain at times after noontime before changing back to snow and then to sleet and rain as the high temperature climbs just above the freezing mark excepts areas farthest north.

But more snow was possible for the region by midweek, the report said.

Snow is expected to fall and create slippery conditions from Bismarck, North Dakota to Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Minneapolis; Des Moines and Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Madison, Milwaukee and Green Bay, Wisconsin; and Traverse City and Marquette, Michigan. The advisory also includes most of the Twin Cities metro.
