Instead, he had to return early Monday morning to complete his 44th PGA Tour victory, claiming a fifth AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am while also becoming the eighth-oldest victor in PGA Tour history.

In a weather-delayed finish, Phil Mickelson triumphed at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am - the site of this year's U.S. Open. All four players return to Pebble along with numerous game's best, including Jordan Spieth, Tony Finau and Jason Day.

Casey birdied the 18th for a 71 to finish alone in second, and he won the pro-am portion of the tournament.

"So at the end of previous year, even though I played poorly, I had something happen where it seemed like overnight - it had really been in the works - where my driver speed shot up 5, 6 miles an hour, which rarely ever happens to anybody, let alone somebody in their late 40s", he said.

Mickelson was standing on the 17th tee when he heard the horn sound to stop play, and he shook his head.

Mickelson has won the tournament four times, the most recent of which was in 2012.

That also led him to enter this week's Genesis Open, which he had not planned to play, prior to defending a title at the WGC-Mexico Championship next week.

Mickelson had no problems with Casey's decision.

Mickelson held a three-stroke lead with two holes remaining when play was suspended on Sunday evening due to fading light, with the five-time major champion returning to close out a seven-under 65 and finish on 19 under.

After a rain-delayed start, Mickelson had produced a blemish-free round and holed six birdies to move to 18 under before play was called off.

Casey blinked first with a bogey on the 11th hole, and another on the par-3 12th when his tee shot came up short and into the bunker.

He just didn't want to stay another day. He preferred to suspend play with his ball on the 16th green, resuming the tournament on Monday when the greens, which took a beating from rain Saturday night and an impressive hailstorm Sunday, would be fresh. The 48-year-old Mickelson said, "I have pretty good vision". "I totally get where he's coming from", he told reporters Sunday.

Jason Day closed with a 68 and was tied for fourth at 13-under 175 with Si Woo Kim (68).
