"We thank the relevant authorities and community as a whole who were involved in bringing the baby girl to safety".

"Durban fire department has been down the manhole and has visuals of the actual baby quite far down the pipe". Rescuers were able to make their way down the drain pipes and locate the baby.

The operation lasted for almost three hours and the little one was pulled out alive and well.

She was examined and rushed to a waiting helicopter before being taken to a nearby hospital for care. Rescue Care Paramedics spokesman, Garrith Jamieson, said he spoke to the trauma doctor at the hospital and reported that the baby girl is doing very well.

"Currently she is in a stable condition and the KZN EMS helicopter is now taking off to get the child to the hospital", said McKenzie.

Rescue workers worked for three hours to save the baby girl, who had been washed five metres down a drain pipe.
