Speaking about the appointment, Oldham Athletic owner, Abdallah Lemsagam said: "Paul has won everything there is to win in football".

Scholes had been interested in taking charge at Oldham Athletic for some time, he was one of the names linked with the job when Richie Wellens was sacked at the end of last season, prior to Frankie Bunn being appointed.

The former Manchester United was formerly a coach at Old Trafford but this is his first permanent manager position.

The former Premier League club are languishing in mid-table in League Two, the fourth tier of the English game.

However, an English Football League meeting held on Friday confirmed that he was cleared of any such conflict of interest, and could take over the management of the Latics.

Manchester United wished Scholes luck, saying in a message on Twitter: "Best of luck to Scholesy in his new role as first-team manager of @OfficialOAFC!"

"I couldn't be any happier at the minute", he told Oldham's official website.

But the governing body ruled Scholes' background interest at Salford - also part-owned by former Manchester United team-mates David Beckham, Nicky Butt plus Gary and Phil Neville - would not be an issue.

Scholes, 44, is due to be unveiled at a press conference at Boundary Park on Monday afternoon.
