Janelle Monae remembers being frustrated last year, but this year she is looking forward to the show, where women are now leading in nominations for big categories like album of the year and best new artist.

Monae's groundbreaking album, "Dirty Computer", is one of five albums by women nominated for the top prize at Sunday's show, airing live at 8 p.m.

The main performers for this year includes Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Dua Lipa, St. Vincent, Chloe x Halle and Travis Scott. "I have to say, this is a golden age of composing", Kernis said, shouting out his peers in his acceptance speech.

The lead up to this year's Grammys hasn't been completely smooth though. The organization awards approximately 70 winners during the show's Premiere Ceremony at 1 p.m., which features categories such as producer of the year, best metal performance, best rap performance and best country song.

Women are also hoping to get their due after the head of the Recording Academy - which includes more than 13,000 music professionals - told them a year ago to "step up" if they wanted to do better on Grammys night. Before the telecast even started, Carlile won three GRAMMYs in a row, one for Best Americana Album for By the Way, I Forgive You, Best American Roots Song for "The Joke" and Best American Roots Performance also for "The Joke".

Ariana Grande, with two nominations in the pop field, pulled out of the show late last week after a dispute with producers over which songs she would perform.

On Thursday, Grande broke her silence and shot back at Ehrlich in a series of tweets. "I came out of the closet at 15 years old when I was in high school, and I can assure you that I was never invited to any parties and never got to attend a dance".

Carlile told the AP she stands behind Grande's "decision to stand up for herself and her art". "I am such a misfit", she said. A study released by the University of Southern California's Annenberg Inclusion Initiative days before the ceremony found that of the 899 individuals who had been nominated for the previous six shows, 90.7 percent were men.

The Grammys are in even worse shape than the Oscars when it comes to figuring out ratings and appeal, and face a continued low-key boycott from music's biggest names on account of an ongoing problem with representation across nominations.

The live ceremony in Los Angeles could see Cardi B take home her first ever Grammy and potentially become the first rapper since 2004 to win the coveted album of the year award for her "Invasion of Privacy". Yolanda Adams, Fantasia and Andra Day will honor the late Aretha Franklin with a performance.
