The Absolutely Fabulous star began the British film awards ceremony on Sunday night with a series of gags about the nominated films and stars, but some viewers were shocked at her quip about the film BlacKkKlansman.

During an evening of typical showbiz glitz and glamour at London's Royal Albert Hall, The Favourite swept the board winning a staggering seven BAFTAs.

People watching the broadcast were stunned at the star's gag, sparking a backlash on Twitter.

Alfonso Cuaron's lyrical "Roma" has been named best picture at the British Academy Film Awards, while costume romp "The Favourite" took the most honours.

Rami Malek was named Best Actor for his performance in the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody and Mahershala Ali won the statuette for his work in the USA civil rights-era road movie Green Book.

The 45-year-old beat out completion from Glenn Close for her role in The Wife and Lady Gaga for her Oscar-nominated film A Star Is Born. "Reverting back to a world of separation and isolation is not a solution to anything", Cuaron added, at a time when US President Donald Trump is demanding a wall be built on the American border with Mexico.

Rami Malek's portrayal of the late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury - a victim of the AIDS epidemic in the days when homosexuality was taboo in rock-and-roll - earned him the best actor award, however. The film also won the Sound prize.

Her co-star Rachel Weisz won best supporting actress for her part as the queen's confidante Lady Sarah Churchill.

Despite being on home soil, Richard E. Grant did not win Supporting Actor for his role in Can You Ever Forgive Me? as Mahershala Ali was given the award instead for playing Dr Don Shirley in Green Book.

A Star is Born won the prize for best original music, accepted by the film's writer, director and star, Bradley Cooper.

"Free Solo" - a film about the first person to climb El Capitan in Yosemite National Park without ropes - won the award for best documentary.
