Toyota has whipped the covers off a new RAV4 TRD Off-Road model at the Chicago Auto Show in the United States, giving its fresh-faced, fifth-generation SUV an updated suspension set-up, new wheels and bespoke tyres "engineered specifically for trail driving".

The new multimedia system comes with Android Auto, Apple Carplay, Amazon Alexa and SiriusXM capability.

For the rear suspension, the Sequoia TRD Pro uses two-inch-diameter Fox piggyback monotube shocks with bottom-out-control technology created to increase damping force for "improved bottoming resistance in unforgiving terrain". Toyota also offers the LED bed light and daytime running lights as an option. Basically, besides the new grille and wheel designs, smoked taillights, as well as the sequential LED headlights on the TRD Pro version, the pickup looks identical to the current model.

Inside the cabin there are seats covered in SofTex faux leather and headrests featuring TRD logo embroidery. Things have changed since then, as new players have entered the ring, prompting the Japanese automaker to be more proactive and revisit its pickup sooner rather than later. TRD and Limited trims can also be had with LED headlights that sport a new design.

Samsung patent reveals next-gen S Pen with camera, optical zoom features
With a literal selfie stick, there would be no need for the camera and, therefore, no need for any notch or punch hole cutout. Honestly though, that sounds like kind of a faff - busting out the S-Pen every time you want to practice your pout.

This particular model comes standard with a 5.7-liter V8 engine with multi-mode 4WD capable of generating 381-hp and 401 lb. -ft. of torque - the same one used in the 2019 Sequoia SR5. This engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

The V-6's standard trailer-towing package includes a Class IV hitch and an upgraded cooling system that gives the truck a 6,800-pound rating.

The Sequoia TRD Pro will go on sale later this year, and its price should come in somewhere around the mid-$60,000 range, sitting close to the top of the lineup, which is now represented by the $68,930 Sequoia Platinum.

Prices for the new Tacoma and Sequoia TRD Pro will be announced closer to their on-sale dates later this year. Model-specific red coil springs, meanwhile, bear an off-road focus, while the twin-tube shocks have been re-valved and feature new internal rebound springs. And the full-size SUV is getting the TRD Pro treatment for 2020, joining the Tacoma, the 4Runner, and the Tundra in Toyota's hard-core off-road lineup.
