This new 'Multifunction' split tailgate will debut on the 2019 Ram 1500

The 60-40 split isn't just for cars and SUVs anymore.

The biggest benefit of this design compared to GMC's MultiPro Tailgate is being trailer-friendly.

Ram on Tuesday unveiled the Multifunction Tailgate. When the doors are open, the bed is easier to step into because a dropped-down tailgate isn't in the way. The tailgate features conventional hinges at the bottom that allow it to be flopped down as a single piece, or its two doors are hinged at the side and can be opened individually. The doors can each swing out a maximum of 88 degrees. Ram also says it'll improve forklift loading, for the real workhorses out there.

While there are 59 distinct new emojis, variations for skin tone and gender make for a total of 230 individual images. Users can expect to receive the new emojis in software updates beginning in April through to the end of 2019.

"The Ram Multifunction Tailgate is intuitive to operate, and owners will find it immediately useful", said Reid Bigland, head of the Ram brand. Ram says the new tailgate retains the strength of a dampened drop-down tailgate with a 2,000-pound load rating. It retails for $995 and an optional center step that retracts from under the bumper adds another $295. But you can see it a little early if you'll happen to be at the Chicago Auto Show, since it'll be there.

The Ram Multifunction tailgate will reach dealerships during the second quarter of this year, and will be available on Ram 1500 models. Public days kick off on Saturday.
