In the 2010 special "Seriously Funny", he said "one of my biggest fears is my son growing up and being gay".

Insiders say that celebrities in Hollywood don't want the job as it places "a target on your back", just as it did with Hart.

At a Hollywood event Thursday night, comedian Kathy Griffin, whose career suffered a year ago when she posted a photo on social media that looked like a beheaded President Donald Trump, said Hart messed up, yet had empathy for the situation.

Instead, Hart began deleting his Twitter account's anti-gay tweets which resurfaced shortly after the Oscars announced him as their 2019 host.

"A comedian says something that offends people and refuses to apologize?" Well done #KevinHart, ' actor D.L. Hughley said.

Hart's apology to LGBTQ people is an important step forward, but he missed a real opportunity to use his platform and the Oscars stage to build unity and awareness. "Hughley tweeted. "(Expletive) 'em if they can't take a joke!

Snoop Dogg also posted a video supporting Hart.

GLAAD, the advocacy group for LGBTQ rights, said Thursday that it reached out to Oscars broadcaster ABC, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, and Hart's management to "discuss Kevin's anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and record".

Griffin hoped Hart's departure would open the door for a woman comedian to host the show. He bowed out on his own, and with an apology.

Proven veterans like Ellen DeGeneres (who hosted in 2014 and 2007) and Neil Patrick Harris (2015) would likely top any list of replacements, but Tasmania's Hannah Gadsby has emerged as a dark horse contender after stealing the show at the Emmy awards in September. Not a comedian? Someone in the LGBTQ community?

Many keep coming back to Whoopi Goldberg, who has hosted the awards four times.

Others have said Keegan Michael-Key and Jordan Peele, Will Smith or Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Busy Phillips threw her own name out there tweeting: 'I AM AVAILABLE'.

Hart initially failed to issue an apology, insisting he had addressed the situation "several times" already. The 91st Oscars are less than three months out.
