New Jeep Wrangler does terribly in European crash tests

The Wrangler is new, having been launched in North America earlier this year and now Europe.

The Fiat Panda has been awarded a zero star rating for safety by Euro NCAP in the latest round of crash tests. It must be noted, the Euro NCAP awarded this rating despite the Wrangler's flawless score on side-impact tests. Amidst promising to be brand new in every sense, the Wrangler only offers driver set speed limiter, seatbelt reminder, driver airbag, passenger airbags, side chest and head airbags.

It also advised that the Wrangler will get autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and other safety features such as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, parking sensors and a rear-view camera in markets such as Australia where it is due to go into showrooms next year.

The Panda and Punto - which was tested 12 months ago - at least have the excuse of being old cars that Euro NCAP felt the need to test against the latest safety requirements.

Being virtually the same vehicle, except for the slightly different body style, the two managed the same score in all categories: 96 percent for adult occupant protection, 84 percent for child occupant protection, 74 percent for pedestrian and cyclists protection and 76 percent for safety assist systems.

"It is truly disappointing to see a brand new vehicle being put on sale in 2018 with no autonomous braking system and no lane assistance". "Deformation of the footwell showed that the structure had reached the limit of its integrity", read part of the report.

Even the models scoring five stars were not ideal as for instance the Hyundai Santa Fe had an issue with side curtain airbags and could not be torn while the BMW X5 failed to deploy knee airbag correctly.

Remember how the Fiat Punto scored a dismal zero stars in a Euro NCAP test?

"Despite the work done by manufacturers during the development of their vehicles, Euro NCAP still sees a lack of robustness in some basic areas of safety". The Panda, last tested in 2011, has now been comprehensively overtaken by rival superminis in the race for safety.

The BMW X5 also suffered from airbag problems, the driver knee airbag not deploying correctly in the frontal offset test and providing little additional protection to the driver's legs. The auto scored 69% for child protection.
