Ocasio-Cortez in a December 2 tweet claimed a $21 trillion mistake could have paid for about 66 percent of the cost of a Medicare-for-all bill. If she pays her interns 15 an hour, she'll make it around two-and-a-half months before she's out of money. And even though Democrats are more vocal about a higher federal minimum wage, they fall behind their Republican colleagues in paying their own interns any amount at all.

"Very few members of Congress actually pay their interns". The Nation article does not allege that $21 trillion has gone missing at the Pentagon, nor does it suggest that a crackdown on alleged fraud would produce trillions of dollars that could be invested in other ways.

Rep. -elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez vowed to pay her interns at least $15 an hour Tuesday night, after calling for Congress to increase wages for their staffers.

House interns fare worse: Only 8 percent of those who work for Republicans and 3.6 percent who work for Democrats get paid. "We will be one of them".

"It is unjust for Congress to budget a living wage for ourselves, yet rely on unpaid interns & underpaid overworked staff" to help Congressmen and women she wrote. As a Latino, Vera said, "I saw an extreme lack of diversity, both in interns and staff in Congress".

Ocasio-Cortez also shared that she went to a local dive bar in D.C. and found underpaid staffers from the Hill working second jobs just to work their day jobs in Congressional offices. "SEVERAL bartenders, managers, & servers *currently worked in Senate + House offices, *" she wrote. It found that in the Senate, 51% of Republicans and 31% of Democrats pay their interns. The self-described democratic-socialist has taken her advocacy of workers' rights to Washington where she has already begun to take on the way congressional staffers in general, and interns in particular, are paid. Schumer's office told Rolling Stone that the ad "was made in error" and that beginning in January, they will offer "a stipend to eligible interns".

Essentially she says, it only allows those that are rich enough, to come work for free as an intern on Capitol Hill.
