Alex Smith has had surgeries to combat infection in broken leg

Several reports say Smith has had multiple surgeries and that his career may be in danger.

The Redskins released a statement Thursday, asking for privacy as Smith deals with this matter.

Smith broke the tibia and fibula in his right leg when he was sacked by J.J. Watt and Kareem Jackson during the Redskins' 23-21 defeat to the Houston Texans on November 18. Now, we may have a clearer idea of why things have gotten so complicated.

Redskins head coach Jay Gruden told reporters a day following the injury that Smith did not suffer any ligament damage and quoted a recovery timeframe of six to eight months.

The 34-year-old has since undergone "several procedures", according to NFL Network's Ian Rapaport, in an attempt to combat an infection which arose from the original surgery to fix the fractures. Smith still approaches this with optimism about playing.

As the top two quarterbacks on Washington's roster, Alex Smith and Colt McCoy spent a lot of time together this season.

In 10 starts, Smith had 2,180 passing yards for 10 TDs and five INTs.
