Following the announcement of the Prime Minister's plans for the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement this week, it has been reported that I handed in a letter of "no confidence" to the Conservative party's 1922 Committee, writes Ben Bradley MP.

Labour MP Ian Murray, a supporter of the People's Vote campaign for a fresh European Union referendum, said: "Westminster is back in session after a long summer recess, but it hasn't taken long for all hell to break loose again". One Cabinet ally said privately last week that she needed the confidence vote to happen, because she would win it, and then be safe from challenge under Tory rules for a year.

May's government has promised to publish a range of analyses to help lawmakers decide whether to back her plan for a close trading relationship with the European Union after Brexit in a vote in parliament most likely to happen early next month.

"We will be very attentive to the political declaration on the future relationship, again on the issues of fair competition and on the access of fishermen to British waters", she added.

British Prime Minister Theresa May took a swipe at rebels.

Esther McVey also announced she was resigning as Work and Pensions Secretary on Thursday as she could not defend a deal which meant the United Kingdom "handing over control to the EU".

She said: "This is a time for grown-up, responsible governance in the public interest - something which has been sadly lacking to date as the Tory party has continued to put its own interests ahead of the interests of jobs, communities and businesses".

"And let no one be in any doubt - I am determined to deliver it", she said.

So far more than 20 lawmakers have said publicly that they have submitted letters, but the total number sent is not known.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister could also face criticism of failing to overcome the final barriers to sealing a full trade deal with the EU.

Leadsom and Gove are holding talks with three other Cabinet ministers, including International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt, who has indicated she may quit her ministerial post over the plan.

Under the latest draft deal, the transition period is expected to last until the end of 2020 with a one-time extension possibility.

What both of these stalled schemes show is while there may be consensus that the PM's days are numbered, it isn't just the length of the Brexit transition period that Conservative MPs can not seem to agree on. There could also be divergence from Britain because Northern Ireland will have to remained closely aligned to the Single Market to smooth trade with the Republic of Ireland.

CBI president John Allan said such a Brexit would be a "wrecking ball" for Britain's economy while CBI director-general Carolyn Fairbairn said politicians were playing a high-stakes game that could lead to an accidental, no-deal departure.
